Ex-cricketer Yashpal Sharma is no more. He suffered a cardiac arrest in New Delhi on Tuesday morning. The ex-cricketer, who was a part of the 1983 cricket World Cup-winning team, was 66. "Yes, Yashpal is no more with us. We just received the information from his family," a former Indian cricket teammate confirmed the news about Sharma’s demise with PTI. Actor Jatin Sarna, who plays the role of the cricketer in the film '83 took to Instagram to pen an emotional tribute. Ranveer Singh, who plays Kapil Dev in the film, also made a post.
On Instagram, Ranveer Singh shared a picture of Yashpal Sharma from his early days while playing for team India. He posted the throwback photo and captioned it with a ‘heartbroken’ emoji, expressing his disbelief.
Actor Jatin Sarna shared a string of pictures with Yashpal Sharma. Some pictures show Sharma helping Jatin on the field and during the prep sessions. The photos also see the late ex-cricketer posing with the 83 cast and filmmaker Kabir Khan. He posted the pictures and wrote, “This is not done sir, no not fair and god you too not fair. Yashpal sir, can’t believe, you can not leave so soon." (sic). Jatin shared how he was excited to watch the upcoming film with the former cricketer. Ranveer reacted to the post and commented with heartbroken emojis.
Saqib Saleem, who also stars in '83, also made a post and offered condolences to Sharma’s bereaved family. He posted a throwback photo of the former cricketer on his Instagram stories. Actor Tahir Raj Bhasin was quoted saying, "Saddened by the demise of Yashpal Sharma. A story of sheer grit and incredible sporting spirit in the history books of Indian cricket . Yashpal Sir was a rock on the pitch and a major reason for India's 1983 World Cup win. Today I remember his accomplishments and immense contributions that made the country proud . Condolences to his friends , family and fans . May he rest in peace." During his career as an international cricketer, Yashpal Sharma played 37 Tests, scoring 1,606 runs, and 42 ODIs wherein he scored 883 runs. Sharma was known for his gutsy attitude and his stroke-filled half-century during the semifinal against England in the 1983 World Cup at Old Trafford. The former cricketer was also a national selector during the early 2000s. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
